WET RotCompared to dry rot, wet rot is very much lesss of a problem. Wet rot is basically timber decaying naturally in the presence of high levels of moisture. Wet rot is usually caused by a structural defect. It might be that a wall adjacent to the timber is suffering from damp or water that is collecting on the timber. If this is the case then the structural problem must be treated at the same time as the timber or the same problem could happen again. It could be something as simple as a damaged paint finish allowing the wood to absorb moisture. Signs to look out for :- Check areas of timbers like windows and door frames for signs of rot especially the bottom of frame where water can collect. Check paintwork as damaged paint finish can increase the risk of wet rot. Quite often the paintwork looks fine but timber suffering from wet rot will feel spongy and looks darker than the surrounding paintwork. Timber in the roof can be of risk because if there is roof damage the rainwater will run onto the roof timbers. Treatment. The first thing to do is to tackle any structural problems. If you do not do this then there is no point in repairing the timber as the problem will reappear. The rotten timbers should be removed and replaced with new and treated timber.
